What this site keeps
Short version: we count visits, plays and clicks to learn what people enjoy. We never sell anything about you, and we don't use advertising trackers.
What we count
When you visit, the site notes which pages you open, the episodes you play and how far you listen, the links you follow (to Spotify or Apple Podcasts, say), and how quickly pages load. Each visit also records where you came from (the site that linked here, or the tag on a link we shared), your country and state or region (never your town or city), and whether you're on a phone or a computer.
We don't keep your name, your email address or your IP address with any of this. Visits are counted with a code made from your connection that changes every day, so one day can't be matched to the next.
The one cookie
To tell new visitors from people who come back, the site may set one cookie, ow_vid. It holds a random number and the date of your first visit, nothing else. It lasts up to 400 days from your last visit and is only ever read by this site.
We don't set it for visitors in the European Union, the UK, Switzerland or Brazil, or if your browser asks sites not to track you (Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track). If you turn either of those on later, the cookie is removed on your next visit. You can also delete it in your browser at any time.
Cloudflare
The site runs on Cloudflare, which also counts page views for us without cookies. Cloudflare sees the usual details any web server sees, such as your IP address, to deliver the pages.
Messages
If you write through the contact form, your message goes straight to Dan by email, sent through Resend, the service that delivers our email. The site keeps no copy, only a count of messages from each connection for an hour, to stop spam.
Book news by email
If you sign up with "Keep me posted", we keep your email address, which page you signed up on, and when you signed up and confirmed. We send you an email with a link to confirm, and you're only on the list once you click it; unconfirmed addresses are deleted after 30 days. Your address is kept on the site's database and with Resend, the service that sends our email, and used only for news about Dan's books and stories. To stop spam, the site also counts signups from each connection for an hour. Once you've confirmed, every email we send has a link to unsubscribe, or write to Dan and he'll remove you completely.
